Lettuce consider how cheesy this will be if the action isn’t organic.
You are already picturing a pure stupid action adventure with Trader Joe as the main character, right? But that doesn’t quite capture the vibe of this amusing, adventurous, but relaxed, almost Jimmy Buffet-styled comedy of just wanting to chill on the beach with the best food and wine you can get. But always getting pulled into another adventure, usually helping out the people who help Joe out when he needs those impossible-to-get supplies, that’s Joe.
Crazy, yeah?
Well, Netflix has partnered with Trader Joe in the most unlikely and fascinating of collabs in entertainment history.
Dwayne Johnson plays Trader Joe, a hunter of the exotic and delicious ingredients to make the greatest foods possible no matter what the cost to life and limb; anything goes if you’re trying to make extremely high-quality products in the middle of a jungle, a desert, or a remote Indian village.
The character of Joe is true to our image of the place—funny, a little odd, always has a wink, demands the absolute best as a spice-hunter and a chef, in the middle of nowhere making the best of having few supplies. It’s an odd juxtaposition of Indiana Jones adventurer and demanding chef, but it works.

Joe has fallen in love with the exotic, and now lives in a tiny amazon village, making time now and then to travel all over the globe to pick up desperately-needed supplies to return to his shop, where he serves great BBQ food out of the back of the wood-made hut…
It’s an insane origin story for one of America’s best known brands.
Of course, Joe has some rivals and enemies, so as he goes after his exotic collection of spices and victuals for a feast for a local village grandfather who is too sick to leave and has never been given a grand feast before, Joe is always under the gun.
He is primarily being hunted by One Dollar Jim, a cheap, conniving dollar-store owning villain played by Ryan Reynolds as he tracks Joe from Africa to China and back to the Amazon.
Comically, it would cost both of them less just to go to Trader Joe’s and get what they need.
Or costco.

Anyway, eventually, Joe gets what he needs and wins over the entire village as he preps the impossibly-good and grand feast even while One Dollar tries to blow up the whole thing, literally.
What can we say. Funny is funny, and this completely ridiculous fun adventure manages jokes about as often as an episode of 30 ROCK or THE FAMILY GUY so we’re going to say we like it, and if y’all get mad at us, so be it.
Get yourself some Trader Joe’s popcorn, shove it in your mouth, and have some fun. It ain’t going to kill you.
